Sometimes zoos are neccessary. For example, the amur leopard, its beautiful, but there are less than 100 left in the wild. Zoo breeding programs are trying to save it.
I read somewhere that there's only like 30 amur leopards left in the wild and only 12 of those are pure bred amurs.... its sad, but it's an example of where zoos are necessary.
They are not unnecessary. Something better would be a conservation society. Wild animals, particularly ones that are so close to extinction, should be bred in captivity to ensure that good genes are passed to the next generation and to make sure they're healthy. They should have no contact with humans. Then, they should be released into the wild. No zoo anywhere captively breeds animals for release. If you heard they did, it's a lie. Zoos are businesses that are used to make money for humans to see animals. Now, is that to say that a lot of animals are probably happier in a zoo? Yeah, they probably are. They don't have to hunt for their food, they (usually) have a special habitat that's perfect for them, and they don't have to worry about providing for themselves. They usually live long, healthy lives. But animals that are disappearing from the wild at an alarming rate shouldn't be on display. They should be contributing to the population in a sanctuary where they can assist in getting their species back on it's feet.
I hope I didn't sound harsh or mean, I'm just very passionate about this subject! No hard feelings!
I'll use this.
